Buried Treasure: A Fresh Kills Reclamation Project
FRESH KILLS (2001-2002) Fresh Kills: Artists Respond to the Closure of
Staten Island Landfill. The Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art at
Harbor Cultural Center presents Fresh Kills, a multi-discipline
works -- most newly commissioned -- that celebrate and ninvestigate the
historic and optimistic moment of the closing of the Fresh Kills
after 53 years of operation.
Fresh Kills examines the history of the
landfill, it's present state, and the future of our garbage - where it
be deposited now that the dump has closed; and its long-range
public use. The dump is one of the largest manmade structures in the
and is allegedly the largest landfill on Earth. Its 2200 acres, not
repository for trash, home to an array of vegetation and wildlife, will
become the largest open green space in New York City.
